Entrepreneurs, Risk-Takers, and Leaders
Saturday, September 01, 2018
Americans, in general, are not afraid to take a risk. Beginning with, for example, the adventurers and pilgrims who sailed the Atlantic Ocean hundreds of years ago to begin a life in what they called the ‘New World.’ They left their previous way of life and most of their belongings to take a chance on a dream. Their urge to explore, expand west, and to create something better is a trait that has passed through generations and still exists throughout America in the form of entrepreneurs…people who risk their money, time, and heart to start a new business.
As I tour Polk County and visit people who have started their own businesses, I see the same desire to explore and to try something new. They have a goal of achieving something ‘better.’ The entrepreneurs who started our local businesses may have started them for different reasons such as financial gain, freedom, or an uncontainable passion or interest. But the willingness to take a risk with no guarantee of the future is a trait evident in all of them.
Entrepreneurs in Polk County and in the U.S. continue to exhibit a constant urge for exploration and discovery. It is this inner drive that pushes them to take risks and to start something on their own and then make it better. In doing so, we all benefit from innovative products, new jobs, and stronger communities. They can give our villages and cities an identity. They can give our communities a chance at a stronger future in the form of jobs and inspiration for our young people to start their own businesses.
We are fortunate to live in a country where people have the freedom to choose their own path. Exploration and discovery are part of what makes America great. Risk-takers do not always succeed, but they do inspire us to follow our dreams. And when they are successful, the rewards can be substantial.
